VR Game Concept: The Shadows Territory

The Shadows Territory is a tactical first person shooter where players battle each other for territory and glory over their opponent and the shadows surrounding them. Players are dropped into a blank black and white arena with various shapes and objects scattered near them and around the room. In a player vs player battle each player must use the objects around them to cast colored shadows on the environment. Using these shadows they claim territory away from their opponent and battle in the claimed shadows until one side is eliminated.

Played on PlayStation VR, players are only able to fire their weapon and attack their opponent while standing in claimed shadows. When a player picks up and throws objects a colored shadow is cast on the environment, claiming that territory for themselves. Players expand their territory to gain the advantage over their opponent and out gun them.

Two basic examples of how we envision the game will be played is that the gunplay will be similar to the Oculus Quest’s “Blaston”. Which is a player versus player first person shooting duel. We imagine the gunplay will feel similar to “Blaston” in aiming and dodging around opponent projectiles. The territory control aspect of the game will have very basic platform mechanics and the shadow casting on the room will function similarly to the game “In My Shadow” where you cast shadows upon a wall to platform around and on them.

Visually, the game will be very basic. Your surroundings in the game will be shades of black, white, and gray with a single white light in the center of the arena. Blocks will be scattered near the players and around the room with very basic shapes such as cubes, spheres, pyramids, ect. Players will either have a red or blue gun, shaped similarly to PlayStation VR’s Aim Wireless Controller. When you pick up a block, it will turn the color that matches your gun and when placed or thrown again, it will cast a shadow from the center light that matches the same color. Players will only be able to stand and shoot while in the shadow of your color so the game is a strategic race to eliminate your opponent and claim as much territory as possible to limit your opponent's movements.

This game will use the PlayStation VR Aim Wireless Controller to aim and fire at your opponent, as well as picking up and throwing objects to cast shadows. The controller's trigger button (R2) will be used for firing your weapon while the two front buttons (L1, L2) will be used for picking up and throwing objects. To track the players movement and facing directions, the PlayStation Camera uses two lenses and 3D depth sensors, combined with light and motion trackers on the controller and headset to accurately track the players movements as. The Shadows Territory will require some degree of walking and moving around, so it will be best played using Virtuix’s Omni One VR treadmill, however, because these are not as easily accessible and cost a lot compared to standard VR gear the game can be played without it, but will require the player to have a larger or clear play space to move around in.

The Shadows Territory is designed to be a fun and engaging tactical shooter with very basic concepts. Will you immediately go for your opponent and try to out gun them? Will you build your territory to limit your opponent's movements? Will you try to block your opponents shadows to gain the upper hand? With different ways to engage a fight and randomized object locations to make each duel different in how you expand your territory you can play for as long as you’d like trying new things and improving to outsmart or outgun your opponent!
